NCIS: Did Ziva & Tony Reunite After She Faked Her Death?
Ziva and Tony’s “will-they-won’t-they” relationship has finally been concluded as the pair were reunited in season 17 of NCIS after 5 seasons apart.
Ziva David (Cote de Pablo) and Tony DiNozzo (Micheal Weatherly) have reunited in season 17 of NCIS after being separated for over five seasons. The two, named “Tiva” by the fans, were an ongoing will-they-won’t-they couple ever since Ziva’s debut in season 3 of the show. Unfortunately, Tony and Ziva’s relationship looks like it will only be offscreen from now on. However, NCIS season 17 hinted at the two’s future together; something fans have been waiting a long time for the pair to finally become official, as their relationship has been one of the most loved romances in NCIS.
Ziva David is an Israeli operative who was assigned to the team as a liaison officer after the death of Caitlin Todd at the end of NCIS season 2. Tony and Ziva’s relationship, however, didn’t truly start until the eighth episode of the season when they went undercover as a couple. This sparked their romantic relationship, though it barely amounted to anything but playful banter and teasing.
As Tony and Ziva’s relationship progressed, work became a large point of conflict between the two. Their work or personal responsibilities forced them to separate, such as when NCIS disbanded in season 5 or when Ziva left indefinitely in NCIS season 11. Several times, the different relationships they pursued in NCIS seasons 8 and 9 continued to prolong the question of if Tony and Ziva would ever get together. However, the biggest factor that separated them was when Ziva faked her death and hid at the end of season 13. In the NCIS season 13 finale, Ziva was presumed dead in a mortar explosion Sahar Azam orchestrated to kill her. Though it was later revealed that she was alive, Tony wasn’t aware for a long time, and they still have not been made an official couple, even after their good-bye kiss. NCIS season 17, however, gave a glimpse into how the two reconnected and what they’re doing now.
Did Ziva & Tony Reunite After She Faked Her Death?
After Ziva faked her death in NCIS season 13, episode 23, “Death Letter,” Tony found out that the two had a daughter together and left the team to take care of her. This was the last time that Michael Weatherly’s Tony was seen on screen in the series. After she was revealed to be alive and in hiding at the beginning of NCIS season 16, Ziva returned in NCIS season 17 to meet agent Gibbs, and in episode 11, “Ephemera,” Tony and Ziva finally were reunited off-screen. After the death of Sahar Azam, the woman out to kill Ziva, Tony, who was living with their daughter in Paris, finally felt it was safe to reunite with Ziva. The reunion was referenced in a letter saying that Tony and Ziva were living in Paris and continued to raise Tali together. Both were finally able to settle and have a semblance of normalcy in their lives.
Why Ziva Faked Her Death In NCIS
As NCIS explains, Ziva faked her death and quit NCIS because she wanted to keep her family safe. The bomb that went off at her father’s farmhouse was initially intended for her and to protect her young children she chose to fake her own death in order to throw off her attacker. This is revealed during NCIS season 17 when Bishop returns to Ziva’s old office where she finds Odette. Bishop confronts Odette as she recognizes the fabric from Ziva’s coat and Odette spills the beans. Adam did try to stop Ziva from leaving once the two realized that Sahar was targeting Gibbs next, but Ziva faked her death to put her family first. While that may be why the character exited the show for 5 seasons, it’s not why the actress Cote de Pablo left the series. Cote reportedly felt that Ziva’s character had been cheated out of a good storyline, and she bowed out of NCIS due to creative differences. During a Q&A de Pablo stated the following:
“Unfortunately because of political things and scripts not being good enough, I chose not to [return to NCIS]. Look, I love this character! I worked for eight years crafting [Ziva] and when I felt like the character wasn’t being treated with the respect she deserved […] They were going to send [Ziva] back to Israel and make her an unfortunate, miserable woman.”
Though they are only off-screen, Tony and Ziva are at least given the happy ending on NCIS that so many have been hoping for since their romance blossomed. It doesn’t seem like they will be seen together back in NCIS as the stars have not confirmed that they’re reprising their roles, but fans can rest assured that Tony and Ziva will be referenced and talked about to remind them that the two are together, alive and well.
